PowerBoss 7000 watt generator

Is anybody familiar with this animal? It is made by Briggs & Stratton, but has the popular 13 hp Honda GX390 powering it. There's a stumper, since when does B&S use Honda engines? But it sure looks attractive for $900, considering other brands with the same engine are in the $1200-1500 range. It does not have some of the bells and whistles like electric start, etc., but that is not a selling point with me. I especially like the surge watts - 12K. Almost eliminates the need to play with the breaker... So is it a good deal for a portable, emergency use only? Or not? Appreciate all replies.

I don't know what genset they put on it, but the honda GX series engines are super. I'd rather have a plain-jane generator with that engine than a generator with bells and whistles with most any other engine (except a briggs vanguard V-twin...those are excellent too).

Thanks, cheese. So what are some of the features to look for in a genset? Brushless over brushes? Anything else?

I don't know much about the gensets. I would prefer brushless, but other than that, I can't give much advice about it.

Is this a honda or a "chonda"(chinese lookalike)?

I, too, am stumped. Do you have a link to the specifics on this unit? I'm guessing that this is actually a Generac (before the Briggs buyout) and would explain the Honda engine. It's just that the buyout was a few years back and there shouldn't be any left on the market, but, if so, would explain the fantastic price.

puey61,

here's the link to the parts list file on the B&S site. Of course, the engine is listed as just "engine". What you said makes sense - these are sitting on the Costco shelf, so it is not the latest model. But will it suffice for my needs and last awhile? Thanks again.

Buy it! Great deal. Although this is likely new-old-stock, you should still get a minimum 2-year warranty, parts & labor on both the gen as well as the engine.

I have this generator

I have this generator I got it from costco for under $1000.00 I use it with my 26ft trailer when camping or at a nascar race.
Last Nov at the nascar race in Phoenix I had it hooked up to two trailers and it worked fine the only problem is it is loud when running......

They can be pretty loud due they have to run 3600 RPM* and the other case why they are loud due undersized muffer.

Most good brandname generator useally have oversized muffer to kill quite a bit of noise.

sometime you can get a piece of rubber slab kinda make it less noise by laying a very large truck mudflap somecase it will quite down a but but not a whole alot.

The other source of noise is very poor or worn out engine support spring or rubber block.

Merci,Marc

* Most portable gas powered unit useally are set up for 3600 RPM but some have optional idle speed contoller which if there is no load on generator it will go down to idle speed until X amout of load then get the engine back up to running speed and run like normal generator.
