Ryobi 790r recoiling?

My Ryobi 790r string trimmer won't pull start. It's like there is too much compression. With the spark plug out it pulls easily. With the plug in it makes a popping sound when pulled like it wants to start.

I removed the muffler. It was not clogged.

Any ideas?

Check your flywheel key. It sounds as though it may have sheared and the timing is off.

Hope this helps,

Flywheel key

Thanks for responding Bob.

I must admit ignorance when it comes to small engines. I have rebuilt auto and motorcycle engines, but, not wacker engines. Can you direct me as to how to check the flywheel key and how to replace it if that's the problem?

Thanks
