John Deere jx75 back wheel locks up

Hi,
I have a John Deere self propelled lawn mower model JX75. The problem I'm having is the back wheel locks up when I pull the mower backwards. I noticed that the shaft on the transmission if I just nudge it forward then the wheel rolls freely. I have adjusted the cable running down to drive the wheels in the propel mode but this did nothing. I have to take the cover off and just move the shaft forward a hair then she is fine. What could be up with this? is there some spring that should be down there to hold this forward other than the one on the cable. Any help would be great? Thank You!.

It sounds like the axle bushings behind the wheels are worn.

I had a similar Deere mower that did the same thing since it was new, and I learned to push forward that fraction of an inch before pulling backwards. I think it has to do with getting the drive to disengage before reversing the rotation of the wheel. I don't think that there is anything wrong, or broken, just a minor quirk of the drive system.
