Need for speed

I have a mtd riding mower 13am675go62. Every time I adjust the speed it seems to be too slow. I'm going step by step by the manual. It has always done this from the first time I changed the belt. Can I just shorten or lengthen the speed link?

Did you replace both motion drive belts, or just one? If not both, then tha's probably the problem. The varidrive system doesn't work right with one worn belt and one new.

Also, be sure the two needle bearings in the vari-drive stack pulley are not frozen and that the center sheave has freedom of movement up and down the entire assembly.
