Riding lawnmower won't start.

I hope i'm putting this in the right place. The key 'turns' the engine over when I try to start our lawnmower, but the thing that 'spins' won't move and just makes a whirring sort of noise. What could this be?

Thanks in advance!

Make sure you battery is fully charged. If it's charged and you are still getting the whirring noise you may have a bad starter or stripped gear.

If it's a Briggs (post some engine numbers) single, I'll bet the plastic ring gear is stripped. Pull the fan shroud ( not a big job) & look @ the teeth of the gear around the flywheel. Are the wore off near the starter?? If so, there is a repair kit for this. Let us know what engine you have as this may not be the answer. Good Luck, Roger.
