You remove the wheel and hub, remove the lock collar (loosen allen screw, use punch in hole in collar to drive the collar around until it gets loose, then pull off), remove the axle boot clamp that holds the boot onto the side plate with the bearing, then remove the whole side plate. Knock out the bearing and replace, and reinstall. While you have this off, it's a good time to replace the axle boots if they are in bad shape. Both can be replaced with just this one side plate removed.

thank's for the help

cheese, I had previously done the procedure you described, with my intention in replacing the boots, however while re-assembling the side plate would not
fit flush onto mower frame, and after I had it all bolted back together, the mower itself would not roll freely in neutral(or any gear) so I tore back into it
and found a spacer about 1" thick..is this part of the bearing? I left it out and
tried it and it rolled just fine? I'm sure it's a needed part, but is it a part of the bearing that simply came apart you think,or any idea where I screwed up?
I plan on replacing the bearing anyway,so no biggie tearing it back down, but
that spacer has me confused......

That "spacer" is probably the center race of the old bearing. There are no spacers that size on that axle...just thrust washers at the end of the hex tube. I bet there's a groove around it where the ball bearings used to ride.

thank's again

sound's like you solved my problem, the old bearing must have pulled apart
when I initially took the side plate off and stayed on the hex tube,so I thought it was suppposed to be there and never looked at the bearing in
the plate itself...no wonder it would'nt go back together flush.....I'll replace
the bearing..thank's

maybe not...

well after lingering over multiple part illustrations provided by snapper.com
seem's there is a rer rider with my set-up,it's listed as a commercial bearing and shows the spacer seperate from the bearing...so I knocked my old one out and it really does'nt look all that bad but I will replace it just the same
I still can't understand why the plate will not sit flush onto the frame though,
maybe the new bearing will correct it..who know's..the part # for the bearing I talkng about is 1-4624 or may list as 7014624

What part # is showing for the "spacer"? I don't recall ever seeing a spacer in a snapper rear axle. Just bushings, bearings, and thrust washers.

part # for bearing spacer

hi again, yea I allway's get the equiptment with the "weird" setup, but I knew
that I recalled seeing it somewhere, finally found where I had seen it.I don't
know if your familiar with mowparts.com but they have diagrams for everthing
lawnmower related, anyway the part is listed as "L.H SPACER" part # 7023447
and the bearing is 7014634 maybe someone else has run into this setup and
can use these numbers...they list quite a few different series with this rig
but the part number was the same for the 5-6 different ones I checked.
thank's again,I'll let you know how it work's out.....

The parts list should indicate which parts apply to what "series" by serial number

so many variations

yea,it list about 2 dozen various series with various setup's,but I believe
my particular mower has had engine changes, deck changes over the years
by different owners and no visable model or serial or series numbers on the
unit itself it's really just a scroll through the illistrations that look like the one you need. I can e-mail a copy of the page if anyone need it,otherwise it's a
45 page pdf download from snapper.but the illistrations from mowparts.com were a lot easier to pick through....and if you know your series # and so forth your way ahead of me lol! thank's

Ok, that plastic piece slips partway into the bearing, right? I wonder if this snapper originally came with the bushing instead of the bearing, and someone used a sideplate off a newer version to "fix" a worn bushing? If so, there could be too many nylon thrust washers between the hex tube and the bearing in the side plate...also, make sure the first trust washer from left to right when facing the axle (from the underside with the mower standing up) is oriented in the right direction. It should have tabs on it that go into the hex tube. After this is where the other thrust washers go. Try installing the sideplate with the boot off to see exactly what is holding it from fitting snugly.

I mentioned I can shoot you a picture of the illistration if your curious and
want to see the set-up...thank's for the head's-up on the thrust washers,I'll
be sure to check those..

Well, I thought I knew those snapper rear ends like the back of my hand...I've done so mnay of them. I just can't picture the part you're describing. Unless it's a part that pushes into the bearing collar and stays with it when you pull the sideplate off, I don't ever recall seeing one in the rear axle. I went to the shop and looked at a couple of snapper rear ends I have back there, but both have the bushing instead of the bearing. Shoot, I just replaced boots on one with the bearing a week or two ago, but I finished it before you posted this question. I saw the part number you listed pictured in an illustrated parts breakdown. It's still not familiar to me. Makes me want to tear into one and see if it's something I've been looking at all the time, and just not realizing it.

the bearing

is listed as a commercial bearing,I don't know if this just means heavy duty
or what, but the back of the bearing is open and that's what the spacer slides
up into, but it is definately a two piece unit and sold individually, the tabs on
the thrust washer were in wrong, the tabs heading towards left wheel, but I
had never removed those so they were installed incorectly previously,so that
was a good catch on your part,thank's..new bearing and spacer will be in in about a week,so hopefully all will gel...by the way, this was a winter rebuild
project after the engine blew, every thing has been cleaned,re-painted,and
have a good used engine sitting on bench for it,will be ready for spring!
