White only has one speed
I have a white LT12 and on the fender is a lever that has park and 7 speeds. No matter where the lever is at it always goes the same speed. I tried looking around and cant see to much. Im not even sure how it works, it doesnt grind gears so it must be some kind of goofy belt drive. I know its not a hydrostatic. Does anyone have any idea whats wrong with it?

Sounds to me that the variable speed pulley in which this lever is supposed to move is frozen up.
The variable speed pulley is really two pulleys in one.a belt runs from the stack pulley (under the engine) to this pulley.Then another belt runs from this pulley to the transmission pulley.
The variable speed pullley is made so that the inside will slide allowing the belt to get loser or tighter.
If you take the floor board plate off,you’ll be able to see it on the left side of the gear shifter.(as seting on the mower)
And if it is frozen up what your going to have to do is jack the whole mower up a little (on the left side) and free the pulley up where the center will move up and down freely

Today I hosed all the linkage anh anything else that should move with some PB. It helped alot but I still have no 1st gear and second you have to wiggle it around and all the other gears will slowly speed up. Tomorrow I have to look for this pully and try to loosen it up. I didnt know thats how it worked, its pretty neat.

You actually have two problems if you don’t have gears,The variable pulley is only for hi and low range.
For the gears,while you have the mower jacked up look for where the shifter linkage goes into the transmission.you’ll see 1 bolt holding it on.It will have a 7/16 " wrench size hex.head.Sounds to me like this bolt has come lose,causing the shifter linkage to slip and misaligned with the shifter rod .
Find neutral on shifter and on transmission,and while holding in place thghten the bolt.
This is a command problem among MTD mowers.

Sounds to me like now the vari speed just needs a final adjustment. If I am not mistaking the transmission only shifts "fwd-neutral-reverse"...? The speed selector on the fender adjusts and coincides with the clutch pedal...
The procedure is not difficult but is multi-step and usually included in most owners manuals. If you can provide model #'s, I'd be willing to bet we could come up with the procedure.

The speed adjuster works just like you said, the pedal will move farther back the hight the speed. I dont have a owners manual for it but I will go see what kind of numbers I can find on it. It works ok in 3-7 and sumtimes 2 but for 1st you put the lever in 1 then you have to pull on the pedal.

The gear box provides fwd neutral and rev. Like someone has already said, the variable speed pulley has to be free to move full stroke up and down. Sounds like you are partially repaired. If you sprayed PB Blaster all over the pulley, might you have oily belts causing erratic speed problems. I've seen sump seals leak engine oil onto the drive belts and the only way to get going was to jump off push and jump back on when the machine is traveling. Now I would'nt do such a thing, but I caught my daughter doing that to an Old Toro that had all of the safety switches jumped. This may not be your problem, but takes only a minute to look. See if the belts have a residue of oil from the PB spray>l

MTD does not offer your manual for download (at least not at this time) nor can I find another source.
On page 17 of this manual however are instructions for speed control adjustment on what should be similar enough a model to give you the basic idea what to look for.
