Craftsman snowblower auger gearbox lubricant?

I have a late 80s Craftsman 10HP, 32" trac drive snowblower, Model #536.885010, and was wondering what type of grease/oil is used in the auger worm drive gearbox? The manual does not have any info on this. Thanks.

Gear box grease

This is a very good question. The answer is it depends on who you ask. The gear box holds about 3oz. I think that the best grease is Shell Alvania EPR00 available from MTD dealers as part number 737-0168A 8oz tube. If you are in Canada you can get a quart bottle MTD number 837-0168. Murray Noma the maker of your snow thrower says their part number 333431MA is the grease to use (their grease is Lubriplate GR-132). Toro uses the same gear box in their small snow throwers (different gearing) they say to use MAG 1 from Lubriplate. Other suitable grease would be ALCO super lube 00(I think this is very close to the Shell grease) or Lubriplate MAG 00.

Excellent answer AJ. Snowman, the simplest term is to use a quality "00" grease, which is a winter weight grease.

If you could post the model & make we can look it up. There should be a sticker on the motor/wheel box those are the numbers we need.

You have an Ariens You should use their special gear lube part number 00008000. There is no cross reference that I know of.

75W90 is way too thick & heavy for a snowblower. Remeber, these are used in cold weather and if stored in an unheated place, 75W90 becomes extremely thick.
I use "EPOO" grease in then gear boxes. EP= extreme pressure.

My manual calls for S.A.E. 30 engine oil. Fill until it runs out of the hole.
