My electric starter from my craftsman snowthrower just whines when i try to start it.I would like to know if i could replace some parts without buying the whle starter. It is a tecumseh product starter # 37000.It has a black cap on the front of it and i was wondering how to get it off.

Thank you

Starter.

It sounds like it's spinning but not engaging the flywheel.
You might be able to buy a rebuild kit for it. Not sure.
It just bolts up to the side of the motor.
I know on my craftsman, I had to take the gas tank off to get at it.

The starter can probably be fixed. Check to see if the bendix is engaging with the flywheel. If not, you can remove the bendix and clean it and the starter shaft. If it's engaging the flywheel, but the bendix is slipping, you can replace the bendix.

There should be a black plastic cap on top of the bendix. Remove it, then tap the ring at the end downward and remove the clip that is on the shaft, and the entire bendix assembly will slide off. I'm still not sure if the bendix is engaging the flywheel or not???

Also check to make sure the mounting bracket has not broke, I just had the same problem on mine the bracket had broke free a bit. So the flywheel and the starter did not mesh up.

You'll have to ruin it to remove it. Pliers and a twist and pull motion.

The dust cap is available seperately and is Tecumseh part number 37051. If, on the other hand you need to replace the gear you may as well get the gear kit, part number 37052 and this includes the dust cap.

Tap it on with a rubber mallet. Or, if your hands have decent strength, then just apply good pressure with the palm of your hand and it will snap into place.
