Honda hunts
I have a Honda Harmony lawnmower that hunts rpm, What I mean it goes up and down it does it thru all throttle settings from idle to full speed. It does it with or with out air filter.
On a side not I hear some poping from the exaust any ideas?

Most of the time when this happens it is a plugged air bleed. The air bleed orifice is the one directly beneath the idle stop screw, it may be plastic or brass. If its plastic remove the idle stop screw and the air bleed orifice can be removed by prying up with a screw driver. If its brass then it will unscrew, blow out with compressed air or spray out with carburetor cleaner. You may also have a restriction in the main jet or possible water in the float bowl, to be sure you might just want to clean out the carburetor completely.

OK thanks
Ok thanks for all the input I will put that on my list of things to get done soon, I might try to go the easy route first and put some carb cleaner additive in the fuel and that might by some miracle dislodge the gunk.
I will try to find some info on Honda carbs just in case I need to get into the inner workings if plan A fails.

I am having the same problem with my Craftsman mower with a 5.5 hp Honda engine. It started after my neighbor ran it for an extended period of time on choke. Last year I had the carburetor replaced and now it still hunts and it does not start easily at all. I would take it back to the same place, but I don't trust the guy any more. It seems as though the engine can't be put into choke. Any suggestions? B.T.W. under load the engine runs fine. Did my neighbor's goof do some serious damage?

I did have a new plug put in at the time of the carburetor swap, but I will try anything. Do you have any suggestions for the poor starting performance? Before this whole fiasco it started in the first 2 tries.

Due to the lack of quality gasoline on the market today - thanks to government imposed restrictions for emission purposes - it is very common to have to recondition the carburetor annually. I wouldn't necessarily replace it each time you encounter carb trouble. Chances are, a thorough soaking and cleaning is all that will be required to get it back to running well. If, perhaps, your neighbor had 3-month old or older fuel then you may just need to flush out the fuel system and add known good, fresh fuel.

I will try the spark plug and cleaning the carburetor. Is there anything I can do to get the mower to start sooner? Could the service guy have done something to the cables or the carburetor so that it will not choke at full throttle?

U can prolly find ur owners manual here http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/OWN_LAW/law_own.htm
It should have some trouble shooting as well as any adjustment for your cable if it is adjustable. If there is no adjustment the cable may be stretched and need replaced.

Let me tell you guys a story...The Honda engine from hell.. I was working on a Honda 5 hp. pressurewasher......Similiar problems, surging, backfiring, would not run off of choke.....New plug installed, proper gap...etc...etc.... Got so bad, wouldnt start................flooded cylinder totally..............everyone is thinking carberation right ??????????? WRONG............. defected COIL... Pop the cover and check the ohm reading off your coil... I not a real fan of Honda engines, verticial, or horiziontial.. Good Luck.......
