Unhappy Craftsman riding mower stuck in 5th gear

Hello, I am new to all of this riding mower stuff, bought a used one, has run great for a long time but now stuck in gear. Is there transmission oil or something like that I need to find and replace, a burned out clutch-I am at a loss. I keep getting stuck-after frantically avoiding trees and the shed, have to pick it up and point in the right diection! HELP pleasae, thanks a lot. Patricia in TN.

The tranny is a sealed unit and is probably getting dry of grease, maybe even a little rusty at the shifter bearings and detents. You might be able to get it to shift again, while spraying penetrating oil where the shifter goes into the tranny case and using a bit of force back and forth on the shifter until it moves. There are needle bearings here that get rusty and make it hard to shift. The other option is to remove the tranny and disassemble it to repair the problem, or replace it.
