B&s 130202 0523

I have a tiller with a 5hp B&S... fuel is not prob. Cleaned wheel and contacts, set gap, got new sparkplug & set gap for that. The juice from the magneto isn't strong enough to spark. Just enough to give a slight zap to person holding the cable. Heck, I even gave the carb a really good cleaning. By my understanding, the particular tiller was made in 1977 (code:77030907). What I'd like to know is, what else is needed to get this thing to run?

Install new points, condenser, flywheel key, and points plunger.

Briggs used to offer these parts in a ignition kit, don't know if they still do or not.

I agree, since the engine is from the 70s, it has points...or at least it did. If the coil has a wire going under the flywheel, it does. You'll want to replace them or update to a new coil. I prefer to just replace the coil with the newer version which has electronic ignition. All you do is install the new coil and forget the points. Leave them in there if you want. The newer coils are more reliable and accurate.
