lawn tractor won't go into neutral

I have an old MTD LT 1238 (riding mower).I noticed that I couldn't push it backwards, only forward. I've always had to use muscle to get it in reverse. The other day I was mowing and it just started smoking. It would not stop, I had to shut it down. Could it be the clutch? Or a belt? A friend had put new blades on but forgot to secure the left side of the deck. The blade belt was turn sideways. I fixed that but I'm curious if the stress from mowing a few times that way would contribute to the neutral situation.
Thanx

Mowing with the belt flipped shouldn't have contributed to any tranny problems. You'll have to remove the plate between the seat and dash to see what happened. I'm thinking the variadrive pulley may be shot.

Talking Thank you "CHEESE" I fixed it

Hey "cheese" Thank you so much for your input. I did just what you said. I knew the smoke smelled like a belt melting and I was able to find a pulley that had the belt not quite on and stuck by a screw or whatever that is that is supposed to hold the belt to the pulley. And I now know the name of the pulley .
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I probably would have had to pay a pretty penny just for that simple fix.
I'm sending good vibes your way
