lawn boy 10304

I have a lawn boy 10304 from 1996. It is a pull start. I have used it about 10 times this year with little problems. However, I now cannot get it to start. When I pull the rope, there is very little slack in the line. I can move it about 2 inches. It does nothing. I took a cursory look under the casing, etc... Everything seems to be together. Any suggestions?

I'd start by removing the spark plug, and see if you can pull it then. Do this outside and make sure the plug wire is out of the way and not able to spark against any metal when you pull the rope. If there is gas in the cylinder causing it to hydro-lock, it will shoot out with the plug removed.

If you still cannot turn it with the plug out, try to turn the engine by the blade (with the plug out). If you still cannot turn it, it is probably siezed. Is it 2 or 4 stroke? Did it stall out last time you used it?
