what causes a black poof of smoke from the carb
and a yank back sensation when pulling the starter
rope??

A sheared flywheel key. Did you hit something with the mower? If so, check to be sure the crankshaft isn't bent.

The flywheel key is what keeps the ignition in time. Do you know how to replace such? If the crankshaft is not bent rendering the mower unsafe, that is.
