Snapper 21" self propelled mower

I was given a Snapper self propelled mower with a Briggs & Stratton 3.5 hp Magnetron engine. The mower has not been run for a couple of years and probably will need to have the carburator cleaned. However, it does not appear to be firing. Since I don't have a manual and have no experience with the Magnetron inginition I don't know how to check it. Can anyone get me started in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Remove the sparkplug wire, put a screwdriver in the plug wire cap hold on to the screwdriver(metal part), give it a pull if you get a little jolt it's working, if not it ain't. Have a good one. Geo

snapper 21 " self propelled

I have disassembled and cleaned the carburator, and set the spacing on the magnetron. The mower starts and seems to run okay, but sometimes I have to take the air cleaner off and hold the automatic choke butterfly open to crank it. Once cranked it runs okay.

What do I need to do to correct this problem? It appears that there are only a couple of moving parts in the carb, but could I have damaged something or reassembled it incorrectly.

Suggestions please.

You haven't indicated the exact model, type and code numbers of your engine but it appears you have an old school diaphragm type carburetor and this is in need of a new diaphragm and furthermore I would recommend a rebuild kit to be thorough. Post back with the previously noted ID numbers so we can advise you of the correct parts you'll need.

The number on the engine is 92902-3176-01, SN 32711321. It is a 3.5 HP b&S with Magnetron.

You do, indeed, have a diaphragm type carburetor and I recommend installing a Briggs 494623, rebuild kit. Be sure to also check the intake manifold for being tight while the carb is off the engine. I've seen the manifold assembly loosen and this, alone, could give you your trouble.
