Question replace drive belt on yard machine

I wish to replace the drive belt on my old MDI Yard machine. The forward/reverse shift lever goes through the belt. How do I get the old belt off? Does the shift lever have to be removed? How do I do that?

If you'd reply back with the model and serial numbers where we can look at it too, we'll be more able to help you.

This is a two-belt setup for the trans drive, which belt are you replacing, front or rear?

I think the rear on is the one that is slipping, but while at it I'll replace both

If you remove the shift knob, the belt can be slipped over the shifter. To remove the belts, the snap ring on the middle pully is removed, then the pulley can be pulled up to allow the belts to be removed. You will need to tie the idler pulley away from the center pullleys while doing this and the two belt retainers must also be removed, If I remember right they take a 5/16 wrench.
