engine backfire

I have a b&s 135212 horizontal shaft. It is backfireing when I try to start it. I got it started once but it didn't run long. I have taken it apart and checked the timing. It is ok. I have checked the armature gap. Also ok. The flywheel key is also ok. Could it be some kind of carb problem? I have checked all that I know to check. Any help will be appreciated.
thanks susie

Spark Plug

I just had a similar problem, turned out the spark plug was defective, it looked fine but the internal porclain insulation was broken and it fired intermittently letting the muffler load up with fuel.
Try another plug
My two cents.........

Did you remove the flywheel to inspect the key? I've had false indications when not removing such to inspect the key. Also, be sure to torque the flywheel nut/starter clutch to 60 foot pounds upon reassembly.
