i have a 14.5 HP B&S that when you turn it over by hand it will make one rotation then it is hard to turn and you can hear the air slowly getting in. is this to much compression and if so would a bad valve cause this?

Make sure that your battery is charged and strong enough, and that all the wire termals are clean and free of any Corrosion build up from the battery posts to the starter. If all this is ok then YES the valve clearance could be at fault.reply back with the model and type #'s of your engine and someone can look up the spec's for you.

The operation you're describing by hand sounds normal to me. What is it doing when you try to start it with the starter? Does it turn a bit and stop at the compression stroke? If so, adjust the valve clearances.

Just throwing this out there - might not hurt to check your oil too. See if there is gas in the oil.

Intake clearance - .003-.005, exhaust - .005-.007.
