JD Snowblower

I have a 10 year old John Deere #826 Snowblower. Last year and also now it sometimes makes a scraping noise like the blade is hitting something. The gear box looks OK. But cannot find anything wrong. Any ideas?

Most likely the impeller bearing is well worn. This sets behind the impeller fan and even the slightest wear with it will cause a loud banging type sound. You'll have to remove the auger housing assembly first then remove the input pulley to access the bearing. The Deere part number for the bearing is E4348E but if it has worn through the bearing and into the flange you'll need to purchase an AM119482, flange and bearing assembly. While there, I'd also replace the auger belt, Deere part number M82612.
