Replacement Batteries For Cordless Trimmers

I have a 2 year old Homelite cordless string trimmer/hedger combo that runs off 18Volt batteries that are now pretty dead. Homelite charges $60.00/battery for replacements!
Can universal batteries be bought anywhere or does anyone know how to adapt other batterys to fit diff uinits??
(for example I have an 18 volt Sears cordless drill & the batterys are pretty close but will not snap into the Homelite

The cheapest option is generally to replace the whole tool when the battery for a cordless tool fails.

Some battery packs can be opened. Many have a series of AA batteries soldered together in the correct order to produce the specified voltage. In that case, they can be replaced with new rechargeable batteries, but rechargeables are not cheap and it could wind up costing as much to do this as buying a new pack.
