My mower (J. Deere riding mower I just bought used) leaks gas from a clear, short (maybe 3 inches) plastic tube that is attached to the part of the carburator housing that is close to the engine block. What is this tube for and how do I stop it from leaking gas?

This tube is the bowl vent for the carburetor. If fuel is leaking from ehre, the needle valve in the carburetor is leaking. You'll want to inspect...possibly replace the needle and clean the carb.
