Craftsman Air Compressor Problem
I just bought a small, used, 1 HP, 3 gallon Craftsman air compressor that looks almost new but has a problem. It's direct drive with a single cylinder piston compressor and the problem is that it won't build pressure over 55 PSI, which means it would probably just keep running until something burned up. There was a leak on the main fitting coming from the compressor output into the tank so I have an idea that someone let it run not knowing it wasn't building enough pressure and caused the rings to stop sealing. Does anyone here have a recommendation on how to confirm this? Thanks

Most likely the seal on the piston is bad. I've seen several fail in the manner you've described.

I tore into it yesterday and found the head gasket blown (thin section between suction & discharge). Funny...gasket set is much less than S&H/tax and no centers near me have it in stock. Like Ebay, Sears really sticks it to you on S&H. I'm going to make one from some gasket material I happen to have. Can't hurt anything if it doesn't work. Thanks...maybe this information will help others with a similar problem.
