engine swap question

Can a 9hp horizontal shaft Tecumseh engine (which runs great), which was used on a 3 yr. old Craftsman snow thrower, be used to replace a 8hp horizontal shaft B&S engine on a 826 Toro snow thrower? Possibly need to make up a mounting plate? What else would be involved in such a swap? Suggestions appreciated.

I believe that the only difference will be, if at all, the crankshaft dimensions (length and diameter). Otherwise, the mount pattern, crankshaft centerline height and overall dimensions will be the same or similar. Simply take all these measurements and confirm if they're the same or similar dimensionally.

I agree with Puey, the one issue that becomes a problem is the engine pulley for the belts. If the crankshaft diameter and length is the same you will have no problem. Usually the length is not a big factor if the pulley is open at the end but most Toro's are closed with just a bolt hole. This insures the lining up of the belts. BTW these pulley's are in the $80 range!... Additionally if you are going from a 3/4 inch to an inch crank or vice versa not only will you need new pulleys, but belts as well.
