Yard Machines 5 hp tecumseh, auger engage
Hi,
I see that another user had a problem with a pin shearing off on their Tecumseh auger. I had the same issue this morning, and figured that part of it out, but now I have another issue.
My auger won't engage. It was working before I threw the shear pin, and one side was working after I threw the pin, but after I replaced the pin, the auger won't engage.
Any thoughts?
thanks.
Brad

So, I figured out it was the belt. I took off the plastic cover and found the belt was off. I put the belt back on the wheels and it squealed and ground the teeth off the belt. So, now I don't know what's next.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Is this a 2 stage machine?? Can you turn the impeller by hand with the engine off & the sparkplug wire disconnected?? You may have to 1/2 pull the auger engage lever to override the brake system. I think something is stuck, or a belt or a idler pulley has piled up. Let us know what you find, Good Luck, Roger

Personally I suspect that when he replaced the shear pin he didn't put it where it belonged and somehow managed to lock the auger. It was his first shear pin replacement on that machine. It's only a theory because I haven't seen the blower up close yet myself. I know it's a John Deere therefore it's built by MTD like almost half the blowers out there. I had never heard of such an incident before and now it's happened twice in a week.

It is possible when you're installing the belts to put the belt OVER the impeller brake insted of under the brake & in the v of the pulley. The brake is low on the right side of the pulley & hard to see, if it's the machine I'm thinking of. Get a flashlight & look real close, or flip the machine up on the front & remove the trans cover & have a good look. Let us know what you see. Roger

Hopkinsr2 is on the money, you need to ensure that the belt is tucked under the brake arm and not over it like you did have it, unfortunately. You will now need to replace the belt. You didn't post the ID numbers of the machine but the belt most likely is part number 954-0431 which may also be listed as a 754-0431 in your owners manual. This belt is actually no longer available but is part of set (of 2 belts), with a MTD part number of 954-0430B. Some shops will sell you the single, 954-0431, belt, but you can't go wrong with the set of 2 anyhow even if you can't find a shop with the single belt. Check your manual for the correct belt part number before you assume my assumption is correct.

Shear pin / 8hm YM
I lost my shear pins on the left-side of my 8pm YM. What's a good source for these pins?
I guess True Value is supposed to have a kit with different sizes. Is there a sure-bet place I can get them? We've got a big snow coming this evening and I want to be ready!

The dealer is always a sure bet in getting the right part, however you WILL pay more by going to the dealer. I go to my local ACE hardware to buy my shearpins.
