Can't get blades to engage

Just a little refresher.... I was giving a non-running Craftsman LT4000. I got it running, rebuilt the carb, new muffler, new fuel filter, replaced the blades.

All of the pullyes turn but when I engage the blades, they don't turn and I can smell the belt burning (from slippage). I know it is routed correctly based on the drawing on the mower itself.

I wonder if the engagement part actually engages it far enough to tension the belt. Or, I wonder if the belt is just old and stretched.

Does anyone know what the lenght of the belt is?

Any suggestions?

We'd need the model# to tell what size belt it takes. It's under the seat and starts with 917.
