chainsaw bar oiler not working

I have an older john deere saw (guessing early 70,s maybe
'73) Both the automatic and manual oiler do not work. I drained oil, flushed out tank, blew out passages with compressed air and still no luck. Does anyone know how these oilers work or have suggestions on what the problem may be? I'm also having a problem getting the clutch off this saw the bolt just won't budge.

What model is your saw? Some of these units used a pump the ran off the crankcase pressure. The bolt on the clutch usually comes loose by a left hand thread. Take the spark plug out and put a section of rope in the hole, but not all of the rope, just enough to keep the piston from going over top dead center and you should be able to loosen the bolt on the clutch.

man, that's an old saw. can't find an IPL for it.
the clutch will either have a nut on the crank or the center will be threaded. spin in the same direction that the saw runs to remove. back then most saws had manual pumps.
it could be a bad oil line, clogged intake filter, or other problem. honestly, it may not be worth a pro repair. try to get hold of a parts breakdown at a Deere dealer.

Here is the Deere part catalogue site. See if any of these numbers match yours. http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/c...ageServlet_Alt

Good Luck

I think that unit is made by McCullick for Deere back then.

john deere oiler

I know its an old saw, my father's first good new saw. He gave it to me and I can't let it go. The rebuild is just for fun. Thanks for the info. I will see if there is a oil pump anywhere on this. I cant find the saw model on the link you gave me though.
