ariens 11hp snowblower how to fix electric starter issues

First of all I have already removed and took the starter to my ariens dealer who found a 20.00 part that had to be replaced...it was a main gear that had been stripped due to pressing the electric starter while the engine is running. Now I have reinstalled the electric starter. The retailer pointed at the carburetor cover and said that had to be removed in order to get to a magnetic part that would catch the pieces of the previous gear before starting the engine. My question is that I was not able to remove the carburetor cover without benting the choke handle. My engine is Tecumseh Ohsk 80-130. What about the Recoil starter screen?

I do not know the age of your unit but have seen a lot of failures in this starter motor gear this year. The choke knob will pull off the choke shaft. Then you will need to remove the screws that retain the carb heat cover. I also recommend that the shroud be removed and all the gear teeth removed from arround the flywheel as the teeth will stick to the flywheel magnets. Had a do it yourself customer come in with a locked up engine after he had replaced the starter gear to find he had not removed the shroud cover and the teeth had jammed between the flywheel and the coil. Luckly he had not been able to get the engine to start first and take out the coil mounting posts and coil. Good luck.

I took off the recoil starter screen and examed the found no teeth in the flywheel magnet. So I thought that I was safe and tried to start it and I could hear the teeth jumping around after trying a few times. Not sure if I had caused any big damange so I called a local areins repair to pick it up. Thank you for your time....you've been alot of help. Also today we are having a nice snow storm....rain/snow....heavy!
