Craftsman LT1000
I have a Craftsman LT100 w/Kohler engine. It sat for a while (couple of years) It starts fine but it backfires through the exhaust. When I engae the blades and put a load on it it runs fine, but after I release the load it backfires. Does this mean the timing may be a bit advanced, if so how do I set the timing. Any othersuggests would be helpful. I have already cleaned the carb.

Sounds like you need to clean the carb out again, Make sure ALL ports and passages are fully open (main jet) for sure.
Use carb & choke cleaner with the little straw to spray through the the ports/passages and jets.
Also,
With it sat that long the carbon build-up on the piston/head could have dried out then broke loose and a piece got stuck under the exhaust valve. A cylinder leak-down test would show if this is the problem.
