I'm not sure what a 50 homelite is, but generally you'd wind up the spool, tie on the pull rope, and let it wind the rope onto the spool.

You take it off to wind it. Wind it up until it stops turning, then back it up until the hole in the rope spool lines up with the hole in the housing. While holding it from turning, insert the new rope through the holes, fasten the end of the rope at the spool and the handle on the other end of the rope, and let the spool go. When you let it go, it will wind up the rope. If it didn't wind it all up, move the handle closer, then reinstall the assembly.
