Question new replacement lawn engine won't start

I just installed a new engine in my craftsman lawnmower because it was only about 2 years old when the first engine died. Well, I put a brand new briggs and stratton in it yesterday with my buddy but when I go to start it, it seems to drain the battery and dies. We checked the battery and it was charged, even tried hooking it up to the truck battery. It cranked that way but when the spark plugs are back on it tried to start but then it would drain the battery? It seemed like the engine was dragging. I'm wondering if my flywheel is damaged? Anyone have any ideas about this? I was also searching on the web and saw something about if you didn't lubricate the pistons it would cause the engine to fail? Was I suppossed to do this when installing the new engine? Any help appreciated.

Is this engine new or rebuilt?
Where did you get this brand new engine?

Along with the prior 2 questions, what is the model# of the engine?

Sorry, but I gotta ask, the new engine has oil in it right? You visually checked it?
