Briggs and stratton 7HP wont start

Over the last year my Craftsman lawnmower became more and more difficult to start.
Now it doesnt start at all.

I replaced the air filter, carburetor, spark plug, and oil but no luck so far.

It makes a noise as if it is going to start but then emits a faint puff of smoke from the exhaust then dies.

Have you performed a compression test ?

Sounds like it could be on the low side.....

Check with your local auto parts chain stores (Advance/Auto Zone/Pep Boy's) and see if they have a compression tester in their rent-a-tool program.

You should have around 60 lbs. compression for it to run but that low would be weak in power.

To repair a low compression issue could require a valve job and or new rings depending on cylinder bore wear.

Good Luck
