B&S Loping/backfire

I have a twin cylinder, 17.5 HP B&S engine that lopes at low speeds and when the engine is not under load. It also backfires (loud) whenever the engine is turned off. Any ideas what could cause this. I'm particularly concerned about the backfiring.

The "lope" is caused by fuel starvation. You'll need to richen the mixture, or clean the carburetor to correct it.

The backfire...that's where the model# will help more. You might find that the backfire goes away when you fix the carb problem. If not, post your model#.
