Hello to all!
I have an MTD roto tiiller model #217-385-372C that is in good shape, the engine is in good shape but I dont have the manual and want to get the power reverse working. Does anyone out there know this machine? It uses 2 belts and i cant for the life of me figure out what size the reverse belt is and how to properly thread it on to the pulley so the power reverse will work.
Can anyone help me with info on this and possibly a reprinted manual? MTD only has info back to 1985. The B&S engine year code is 77 so i would expect this to be a 79 or 80 model tiller.
can anyone help me?
thanks to all for looking

Is any chance did this engine have main crankshaft pully and second smaller pully which it work off from camshaft [ sorta like two crankshafts comming out of the engine ?]
The reason why the main crankshaft is standard roation while the camshaft is reverse rotation and it run half speed of the main crankshaft speed as well.
let us know if that is the situation if not let us know.
I found the website for that unit but it need a serail number i did ran model number it came up that it need serail numbers due over the time they made few changes along the way.
Merci,Marc

No this has a standard horizontal crank B&S 13 cu in engine the reveras is done by reversing the belt drive for the reverse by using a long belt and routing it so it will rotate clockwise which will drive the tines in reverse. Only 1 pully ,1 rotation direction.
And yes it works BUT NOT CORRECTLY!

Hi. I've been a couple of days trying to find out the answer to the same question you asked. Did you get a reply to the routing of the belts? I really can't even identify my tiller. I think it's a Wards tiller and one guy said that mtd made tillers for Wards. I had wizard tiller in my mind for a while, but I don't know what made me think that. Maybe you can help me with this too. I don't have a nameplate, SN or anything from the tiller, but the briggs engine is a pretty common model. I've completely disassembled sand blasted and repaited the whole thing, now trying to put it back in service, I can't see how the power reverse is suppose to work. I'd even email a pic if you would be so willing to help? Or if you have a pic of yours, My email is limitles@netscape.com. Thanks and I hope we get our answers. Steve

Chipper man,I sent one of you guys (limitles@netscape.com)a e-mail with the manual in it,tomorrow I'll go out to the shed and take a look at the routing of the belts,If I can find your e-mail address I'll send you the manual,or you can get it from"limitles"that will list the size of the belts,I've got all that info, because I went through "the beast" last summer, even unfroze the tranny and ball spring levers,adjustable,up-down & swivel handlebars.replaced the drive disc, very important for the reverse feature.I'll be talking to you,Good Luck!

The correct reverse belt is p/n 954-0201. It is routed over the engine pulley then around the front idler. As the idler drops, the belt is pulled against the engine pulley.

Wizard, MTD Rototiller Reverse Belt Routing!!!
Hey! I have the routing diagram that seems to work for both machines. Mine is a 1975 Wizard, but now I've been told it is the same for mtd as well. If you want a pic of the routing for the wizard, or a couple of pdf files for the mtd, I'll be glade to send them to you. Happy gardening to all!

Hey, I got that diagram for your wizard it is different from my MTD. My MTD. has a vertical shaft and the belt drive assembly is underneath the motor. The motor is mounted to a shroud that houses the assembly. If you know anything or have any info on this units drive assembly please let me know thanks BigPPDim@Hotmail.com

Please send the routing diagram and a pic if it is not too much trouble.

I need to know how to access the drive belt/s and change them out. I removed 4 screws that hold the cover over the belts and the motor bolts down to. The cover is loose and can be pried up a little but apparently the belts are still preventing me from actually lifting the motor and cover off.

Does it have the rubber drive wheel for reverse like the 213-385 , manual at
MTD Rotary Tiller Operating Instructions | ManualsOnline
if no rubber wheel maybe it's like this one
http://lawnandgarden.manualsonline.c...214385000.html
as it uses that 954-0201 belt

For an owners manual use:
Part Finder
I entered the model number 217-385 and got access to the owner's manual.
