Sears 93 riging mower stops throwing

I have a 1993 Sears 917.255 mower. After mowing half acre of 1.5 acres the mower stops throwing the grass. I hear the blade engagment slow down. I stop mowing wait for the momentum to reengage then start moving again. I changed the belt, to no avail. I mow at the 5 slot deck secting, mow at 6 speed. Tried speed at 5, same thing.

Might need a new spring on the belt tensioner?

Is the belt tight when you engage the blades?

I've seen this limited times, but I have seen the engine stack pulley worn so much that the belt rides down at the bottom of the pulley instead of being tightly wedged between the sheave. This allows the belt to be tight, but still slip because the contact area is far less than it should be.
