replaing flywheel key on sabre riding mower

I have a 1997 sabre model 15.538 riding lawnmower made by john deere.....It made a loud backfire and will not do anything now....I thought it was the flywheel key....is this a tough replacement on a 15 horse brigs engine......railroader10

It's not a hard repair at al, but a flywheel key very rarely shears on a riding mower engine unless someone had the flywheel off before and didn't properly torque the flywheel bolt. I would take the valve cover off and have a look at the valve train...assuming that you've already tried a new spark plug.
