GX 160 coil problems

My GX160 is on a ditch pump and it has been running very well for about two years. At the beginning of the season it started perfectly and I had no problem. One day I went to start it and it wouldn't start. Starter fluid didn't do anything so I checked the spark. Seemed pretty weak. Check the low oil kill and it didn't make a difference. I had some oxidation on the flywheel which I wire brushed. That didn't help. Thinking that it might be the coil, I put some #220 sandpaper between the coil contacts and the flywheel to clean it and it started immediately with no problems. That was yesterday. I thought I found the problem. Today I tried to start it and I had the same problem. I tried sandpaper again and it didn't work. Any ideas? I'm frustrated and the hot part of the summer is rapidly approaching.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have swapped out the spark plug and it still didn't fix the problem.

Thanks, Rich

When you swapped the plug, was it a new one? Try disconnecting the kill wire from the coil and see if you get good fire. If not, the coil is bad (assuming the test is done with a good spark plug).
