John Deere electrical problems
I just purchased, from individual, a 1980s John Deere 212.
When I first purchased it, I had difficulty startingi t. The engine would fire, but not start. I finally got it started. Ran out of gas and could not get it restarted. I ran the battery down and tried to recharge and got a cell fault error. I took the battery out and replaced it with a cheap HDepot battery. The battery posts are different. The old one had the posts shaped like an O, the new battery had posts shaped like -. I hooked up the battery as best I could but now the solenoid goes wingggggggggg and the starter does not engage. Also the hot battery cable has two wires hooked to it, one going from the battery to the starter and another going to the other electrical leads.

I am pretty sure that the new battery you put in is a lot smaller in size than the one you removed. It does not have enough cold cranking amps to start your motor. The original battery was a large one like a std, car size battery. As far as starting, have you checked the points, plug, condenser and timing?
