Question B&S Engine surging (or loping)

I want to remove and clean the carburetor on a Sears Craftsman GT 18HP tractor. The engine plate has:
Model 422437
Type 1209 01
Code 88050512
(Does 88 mean 1988?)

I downloaded the following IPL from the B&S site:
Model Series 422400
Type Numbers 0728 through 4888
For use on engines built before date code - 01121300

However, the carburetor views show only 3-screw and 4-screw fuel pump mount carburetors. My fuel pump is not an integral component mounted on the carburetor. It is mounted on a panel between the engine and the panel in front of the driver's seat with the gas line hoses from the gas tank and to the carburetor attached.

The IPL above was the one listed for downloading when I typed in 422437 in the search box. Is there any way to find a parts list and diagram for this apparently non-standard (maybe obsolete?) carburetor with it's separate fuel pump, or a carburetor/fuel pump overhaul kit?

Double check the model number.

Does the crankshaft come out of the bottom, or side?

I don't know of a diagram online for the carb, but the carb is simple enough from what I recall. The fuel pump mounted on the shield is replaceable...they still make them, and still make rebuild kits for them, but I believe your carb is the issue in your case. You should be able to remove the top of the carb and clean it out while still mounted on the engine if I remember right.

Question

Cheese,

Do you mean use a carb cleaner aerosol spray? Will this pentetrate deep into the throat, down to the throttle valve and needle valve, etc.?
I need to get more gas into the fuel mix, right? Is that the reason the engine is surging up and down?

Yeah, the fuel mixture is lean. The spray cleaner may be sufficient, but you need to open the carb, not just spray it in from the outside.
