JD 445 Gas Gauge Problem

The gas guage on the dash (not gas cap) of my John Deere 445 is not working and is always at 1/2 tank regardless of how much gas it has and if it is running or not. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this without buying and replacing all the parts?

Check the connections between the fuel sender and gauge. If all are tight, it may be the sender. Also, check all fuses. I'm thinking that it can be tested with an ohm meter by moving the float and watching for resistance changes on the meter. You could start by removing the sender from the tank and moving the float with the connections hooked up and watching your fuel gauge. If no reading, then try the ohm meter. If it works with the ohm meter then bad gauge. If it does not work with either, bad sender.
