Murray Tractor
I have an old murray riding tractor model# 40604a that was given to me. The engine starts and runs but idles erratically. The clutch/brakes dont work correctly ,so I suspect the belt is put on wrong. When I push the clutch and put it in gear, the mower only moves forward if I hold down the clutch pedal. When I release it, the tractor stops. Does anyone know the correct way to install the drive belt? Or any suggestions on how I can fix the carb. A diagram for these items would help. It has a Briggs engine model 280707 type 0411 01 code 90022811.
Thanks for any help you can give.

look under the mower, the idle pulley for the clutch should be against the drive belt and when you push the clutch pedal down it should release the tention on the belt if the belt is on the wrong side of the idler for the clutch that would explain your problem. hope this helps some., i do not have a diagram for the belts
