Cub Cadet 2166 Starting Problem

I have a lot of problems starting my tractor. When I turn on the ignition switch, most of the time there is just a load click. Evenutally I get it to start. This has been going on for a while.

It is a Kohler engine with a starting soleniod and a Delco starter with Kohler part number.

How do I figure out if the problem lies with the solenoid or the starter?

Check for power at the starter wire coming from the solenoid. If there is power there while trying to start, then it's the starter giving trouble. If there isn't power there, it's the solenoid.

Thanks, Cheese. It was the solenoid. I took it to a local outfit that fixes alternators, etc. and they fixed me up. Wound up with a new solenoid and starter for the price of a replacement solenoid ($90 plus shipping on-line).
