Electric edger troubleshooting question
I'm trying to troubleshoot a dead electric edger. When I opened it up, I found that the incoming 120VAC power, which comes down the edger's shaft from a plug up at the top of the handle, is connected to a rectifier. The rectifier sends 120VDC to the motor. When I depress the power switch, there is 120VDC at the motor terminals, but the motor doesn't turn, and the motor shaft can be easily turned by hand, so I assumed the motor is dead. However, there is another set of wires coming off of the DC side of the rectifier. These two wires, one of which passes through a 20W 10 ohm resistor (or maybe it's 10W 20 ohm -- I forget), run back up the shaft of the edger. The handle at the top of the edger has nothing but the momentary contact switch to send power down to the motor, and I have no idea as to what these other wires are for or if they may have something to do with why the edger won't run. Is it some sort of braking mechanism?

Hello: eclipse
Those additional wires ("another set of wires coming off of the DC side of the rectifier".) that return from the rectifier are the unused electrical power return wires.
Chances are the motor is dead or the rectifiers circuit is dead. Best advice, if you're not skilled with electrical circuits or electrical components is to replace the entire edger/trimmer.
Usually not worth the time or $$$ replacing parts in an attempt to to fix it IMO. Opinions and circumstances vary. Use your best judgment and proceed from there.
