I'm not into racing, but you'll want to pick up a mower with a regular gear type tranny, not hydro. Usually a smaller lawn type mower, not a big garden tractor. Usually something that runs a 42" deck or less. Stay away from mowers with varidrive systems like most of the MTD/bolens/troy-bilt/huskee/yard machines mowers. An old '90s murray with a 12 horse briggs that came with a 40" deck or something along those lines. I built one from a murray like that once. It took my mods well.
