1990 model 12hp Briggs and Stratton problem

I have an old Murray 40604A mower that was given to me in good shape. The only problem I'm having is that the mower will only run with the throttle in the choke position. I mowed a couple passes around the yard but then it would cut out if I had the blades engaged and was moving. Then I restarted it and was driving it but it would start to die until I depressed the clutch. Anyone have any idea where I could start as far as trying to remedy this problem?

Sounds like the carb has water and/or trash in it. Remove the bowl and clean it out.
