B&S 24 HP Intek Twin

I have a Craftsman mower with a B&S 24 HP Intek Twin 24 OHV engine. It won't start. I've checked the gas filter and have gas at the entry to the carburator. If I put a small amount of gas in the carb opening, it will start and run. However, it won't start normally. Suggestions?

When you switch the keyswitch to the ON position, you should hear the fuel shutoff solenoid "click" as it opens. It's located on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. If it doesn't open the engine won't get any gas. It could be a fuse, a wiring problem, or the solenoid itself.

You may also have trash in the carburetor.

I did hear the solenoid clicking. I removed the cover and gasket at the gas inlet and didn't see anything there. The mowers only 2 months old. The ports looked clean to me.

If the engine has a manual choke, see if it'll run with the choke pulled out.

Make sure the hose that runs from the fuel pump to the crankcase is hooked up. The pressure pulses from the crankcase make the pump work.

You need to verify that it's actually pumping gas up to the carburetor.

If nothing shows up with those items, it's got to be trash in the carburetor, which will require removing the jet and blowing out the passages.

Since it's only two months old, I'd think Sears should be fixing it for you.
