I need to change the grease in this transaxle but there's only one plug. Is it necessary to disassemble the top plate to accomplish this?

Pretty much have to split the case if you want to "change" the grease, as there is no way to get the old grease out.

This transmission uses Tecumseh Grease P/N 788067C, and Locktite 515 adhesive to seal the top and bottom case together.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm just a little leary that once it comes apart I'll have parts flying everywhere. I'm changing the rear pulley from a 9" to a 5.5" and I don't won't to cause any damage when I take it out for a spin. Thanks again.

You can look at a parts breakdown of your transaxle at partstree.com and get a better idea of what you will find if you split the case. If you take the top off most everything will stay in place in the bottom, there are a few small parts that can come out, but it's not that difficult to work on these, just take it slow and easy.

Best of Luck...
