4 cycle oil (what kind to use)

What kind of oil should I use for my 4hp B&S engine? I think I'm using 10W 30 right now, and it seems to be working fine, but is there something better? Thanks. And while I'm here, can someone give me a basic maintenance rundown?

Small engine pro's will clarify but I use straight 30. 10W-30 has detergent in it and you don't want that in there.

That may be what I'm using at this point, I'm only sure that there is 30 in the name. Do you prefer synthetic or genuine?

10W30 is fine, or a 30WT HD is also recommended. Both types of oil are detergent oils. Air cooled engines are designed to use a little oil about 2 - 3 ounces per hour of loaded run time. Consumption could be a little higer with a 10W30 oil, so you may have to add a little more often then with straight 30WT.

I recommend checking the oil every time you fill the fuel tank, you won't need to add each time, but if you make it a habit, then you will never run low. Oil is the life blood of your engine.
