Briggs muffler

I have a muffler on a 12.5 briggs engine that will not stay tight. The threads are bad where the bolts screw into.
Can they be drilled and tapped to 3/8 or should the be heli-coiled?
thanks

Personally I prefer Heli-Coil inserts, but if there is room, you could drill and tap out to the next larger size. This sometimes will require modification to the muffler to accommodate the larger mounting bolts.

Also, just so you know, if this is a flathead briggs, the muffler port in the block is threaded for pipe thread and you can install a screw-in type muffler if desired.
