engine options for engineless craftsman snow thower
my brother picked up a almost mint condition craftsman 8.5 hp 28 snowthrower body for free model 536-886650
but of coarse it's missing the 8.5 tecumseh engine
he would like to put an engine in it since it's in very nice condition, looks new
the former owner ran the machine with no oil in it,
took it out and threw the engine in the trash
what engine options will fit in this machine
will a used engine with, say a 6 or 7 hp from another machine fit?
will an older engine fit if it's running good?
i know he can't afford to buy a new engine

Make sure you get a Tecumseh SNOWBLOWER engine. Snowblower engines do NOT use an air filter and have a "heater box" around the carb to keep it from freezing up.
Check Ebay and Craigslist. I just found a running 10hp Tecumseh snowblower engine on CL for $40.

no HF stores here
have been checking craigslist
will not buy from ebay
this snow thrower body was listed on craigslist for free
just found out that all of the engine shaft pulleys, spacers, washers and bolts was included
so this should be a little bit easy
hope i will find a deal like that on CL
are all shafts on snowking engines the same size,
and height?

You really want to stick to a 8-11HP engine. The blocks are smaller on the 6 and 7HP's, thus when you mount it crankshaft will sit back and pulley's will not line up with auger and drive pulley's. Most importantly when searcing for a replacement get an engine with same diameter and length crankshaft as original. You will also need to know if crank is keyed or tapped or both. This will allow you to use the pulleys and you will be able to buy correct belts by looking up IPL through sears web site.

checking the diameter won't be a problem
i have the original pulleys
but since the engine is missing,
how to know the correct length of the shaft and if it was keyed or tapped?
the original pulley has a square notch
does this mean the shaft is keyed?
is tapped means threaded ?
on the sears site there's a diagram of the engine assembly
again the model is 536-886650
it shows a bolt at end of the shaft
thank you for your help

Yes you need the crank keyed and tapped. (yes tapped means threaded). Common length is 2 5/8, longer is OK as you can always cut. Too short is not good. I am trying to get a drawing on you oringinal engine and post the length.

i hope it can be adjusted
